Satoshi Nakamoto Found by Newsweek?

Published by:

I don’t think so.

The magazine, which returned to print this week, returned to news stands with the impressive headline: “Bitcoin’s Face: The Mystery Man Behind the Crypto-Currency“. The author, Leah McGrath Goodman, claims she followed the trail all the way to the end, and found the elusive creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto. What do you think?

It turns out, Miss Goodman discovered, that Satoshi used his real full name on the bitcointalk.org forums.  That’s odd for a guy who values his privacy. Oh, and he called the cops on the reporter when she wanted to come speak to him. That tells you he’s not afraid to have his name and house associated with a police report about bitcoin.

And while Ms Goodman’s article reads like a cheesy novella thriller, it actually lacks the type of compelling evidence that would seal the deal for crypto-junkies. Proof in the age of bitcoin means showing a signed message on the genesis block or some blocks known to belong to Satoshi.

Whether or not this reporter actually found what she was looking for is in dispute, but Gavin Anderson, lead developer for the Bitcoin team, tweeted his regret.

Reddit is abuzz with speculation with regard to the authenticity of these claims. Many are quick to point out that no definitive proof yet exists that can link this man to Satoshi’s known online identity. But why would Satoshi reveal himself? He must know that producing a figurehead for the currency will put him in the line of sights for angry governments disrupted by the blockchain technology. Some of the top comments on Reddit suggest “doxing” Ms Goodman as retribution.

However Ms Goodman has little to lose and everything to gain by becoming the focal point of hater nerd rage. People will buy Newsweek’s new print edition for its novelty and catchy cover story, television news will be talking about this for a few days, and the internet will be talking about this article for weeks. Whether or not it’s true, it will succeed as click-bait and as a story that everyone is talking about. Until the real identity of Satoshi is revealed with indisputable proof, I’m skeptical of the claim.

This is the first blogpost on this site in almost a year. I used to blog on a site called “LiveFreeOrDance.com” a personal blog site I named after my arrest at the infamous “Live Free Or Dance” party in Keene, NH. Since then, a lot has happened to me. You may enjoy the blogposts from the past, which I have moved over to this new site, DerrickJ.me. Most important to me was that I retain my Jail Journal, a serious of blogposts I wrote from the Cheshire County House of Corrections. You can find those here.

Is BitPay Anti-Guns?

Published by:

Central Texas Gun Works, a popular gun store in Austin, accepts bitcoin as payment for everything they sell. Safety training, tshirts, shooting courses, and firearms. They not only sell all your favorite guns for bitcoin and ship them anywhere in the country, but they also have a bitcoin ATM in their store. They were one of the first in the country to have one, and they are long-time sponsors of projects in the liberty movement such as John Bush’s “The Liberty Beat“.

One blog is reporting that yesterday Central Texas Gun Works had its bitcoin account frozen by processor BitPay.

For those who jump the gun to point out the risk of large scale buying of illicit firearms, Michael clarifies every paying customer will need to fill out Form 4473, a United States government form that must be submitted when a person purchases a firearm from an authorized dealer. The FBI is informed and background checks are run before the transaction is completed. The store, earlier turned down by BitPay because of concerns over its firearms sales, has now partnered with CoinVoice to process its payments.

While I’m glad owner Michael Cargill was able to find a replacement processor so quickly, but I am shaking my head wondering, “Why would BitPay stop serving Michael?” I’ve tweeted them, but no response yet.

Text messages direct to your contact lens

Published by:

Cool! I can’t wait to utilize this technology! At the very least, it will be helpful to avoid squinting while posing for photographs. From the Telegraph:

Ghent University’s centre of microsystems technology has developed a spherical curved LCD display which can be embedded in contact lenses and handle projected images using wireless technology.
“Now that we have established the basic technology, we can start working towards real applications, possibly available in only a few years,” said Professor Herbert De Smet.
Unlike previous contact lens displays, which are limited to a few small pixels to make up an image, the new technology allows the whole curved surface of the lens to be used.
One application suggested by the researchers is a “one pixel, fully covered contact lens acting as adaptable sunglasses”.
“This is not science fiction,” said Jelle De Smet, the chief researcher on the project, who believes commercial applications for the lenses will be available within five years.
“This will never replace the cinema screen for films. But for specific applications it may be interesting to show images such as road directions or projecting text messages from our smart phones straight to our eye.”
The innovation is the first step towards “fully pixelated contact lens displays” with the same detail as a television screen.
The lenses could also be used for medical purposes, for example to control the light transmission toward the eye’s retina in case of a damaged iris.
For cosmetic purposes, the lens could be used the iris of the eye a tuneable colour, allowing the user to change it to suit their mood.

Writing for ADAM VS THE MAN

Published by:

I began my role at the ADAM VS THE MAN Studios as the Producer of the 20-minute nightly comedy newscast “AVTM” on YouTube. After 2 months of going strong 4 nights a week, and producing 33 episodes plus a pilot, the show was modified to a 5-minute news summary show. During the entire span of the show, I had the pleasure of taking a major role in the participation of writing for the show. While I plan on writing more in the future, I will be taking a hiatus for at least a year while I travel the country, beginning in January. Below are some highlights of my favorite segments that I’ve written for the show so far:

After a brief interruption, the popular news website PeaceNewsNow.com is back online.

Users of the site previously received a “502 Gateway Error,” but the site returned within approximately 15 minutes of disappearing.

PeaceNewsNow.com Crashes!

Published by:

I was working on my website tonight when, at 8:58pm, I received an unexpected “502 Bad Gateway” error. Right in the middle of my work! I hope it saved. I’ve been working on PeaceNewsNow.com every day and making lots of changes! Hopefully, over time it becomes easier to produce all these videos and podcasts. I figure if I keep myself in a pattern of producing these things every day that the show will become very popular. You can check out the latest episode of Peace News Now below:

Victimless Crime Spree Haters

Published by:

This comment was recently posted by a commenter on Top Documentary Films and reminded me of how I used to get upset at words like these. They used to inspire me to spend the next hour writing a detailed response to every point made by the nay-sayer. Those words would be ignored or further trolled. What I learned was that people who make comments like this one aren’t actually interested in answers to their questions. That can be frustrating for answer-seekers and problem solvers to accept. It was for me. But I’ve found that now that I’ve let go of the need to respond to these types of comments with words, I’ve been much more satisfied to respond to them with my life’s work.

That’s the one thing these nay-sayers can’t ignore. Of course anarchists have the most moral and practical ideology. But are we to expect any doubters to accept that on faith? They may not be intelligent enough to comprehend the philosophy, but what any person can see is the outward choices that people make about living their lives. Me? I produce media in exchange for anything but the US dollar. That’s one simple way to set an example for others to follow.
